| Ummm...so
who ARE you anyway?
I'm a singer/songwriter/musician currently living in New
York (via Los Angeles via Chicago via Paris via Detroit).
I play guitar, piano, and I am learning to play drums.
You lived
in Paris? Parlez-vous français ?
Je veux être une vedette du rock. I have a French
degree. I also teach children's music classes in French,
Spanish and English.
So tell
me about your music?
Intimate and metaphoric. Short songs with hooks inspired
by classical music. Rock that’s lyrically smart, sexual
and somewhat dark. But fun. I've been compared to other
girlish rockers like Liz Phair, Elastica, Sheryl Crow. And
Nirvana. Perhaps you can better tell. Take a listen.
What
is your background in music?
I have been involved in music all my life. I started studying
classical piano at age 7. During college, I swapped french
pronunciation lessons for voice lessons with an opera singer.
I also studied at Chicago's Old
Town School of Folk Music and was a guitar instructor
at the school for 4 years before relocating to Los Angeles.
I interned at Universal Records (Uni
Distribution - Geffen, Interscope, and Universal) and worked
at two "indie" recording studios in Chicago –
the storied Idful Studios (Brad Wood) and Kingsize Sound
Labs (Mike Hagler/Dave Trumfio). The coolest thing was watching
Wilco record Summer Teeth at Kingsize.. Even more cool was
making runs for their taco bell.
Have
you done any recordings?
I’ve received four grants from the Chicago Department
of Cultural Affairs to produce EP’s of original material.
And what
were the results of that?
I just finished recording and mixing six songs (in five
days!) with my old pal Ed Tinley (Liz Phair, Ike Reilly)
in Libertyville, IL. I'm calling the EP "The 3 Poisons",
based on Buddhist teachings that suffering
is caused by three delusions: attachment, hatred, and self-grasping
ignorance.
In 2003, I worked on a four song EP with Ed at Diamond City
Studios in Chicago. I named the EP "Dry Mouth".
It has received airplay on Nic
Harcourt's Morning Becomes Eclectic show (KCRW
88.9 Los Angeles), WXRT
93.1 Chicago, The
Zone 94.7 Chicago, WLUW
88.7 Chicago Independent Radio, and WBEZ
91.5 Chicago National Public Radio.
Also, in 2001, I recorded a five
song EP with Jay
Bennett (formerly of Wilco), with engineering and co-production
by Mike Hagler (Neko Case, Calexico).
Ok. Great.
So how can I hear your music?
You can download my tracks in the sound
section. But of course I recommend purchasing
your very own copy of my CD -- complete with some sultry,
x-rated cover art.
So what
have you done for me lately?
I'm currently writing songs and performing
in NYC. If you are interested in booking me for a show,
you can contact me here.
Swell.
Wanna collaborate?
I'm always interested in collaborating. If you're interested
in my music, please drop me an email with links to any recorded
mp3s you have to: sara@saraosmer.com
